КРАТКАЯ ИСТОРИЧЕСКАЯ СПРАВКА: В соответствии с древними документами считается, что предки хинов были подарены правителями Кореи (во время правления Династии Силла 377-935 гг.) японскому двору в 732 году. В течение последующих 100 лет в Японию было привезено большое количество хинов. В исторических хрониках также зафиксировано, что посольства, отправляемые в Китай (во времена династии Тунг 618-910 гг.) и Северную Корею (во время правления династии По Х‘ай 698-926 гг.) по возвращении обратно привозили собак этой породы. Во времена правления династии Shogunate Tsunayoshi Tokugawa (Шогунэйт Цунайоши Токугава) (1680-1709 гг.) порода получила развитие в качестве дворцовой той собачки в Замке Эдо. В 1613 году британский капитан Сирлс привез одного хина в Англию, а в 1853 году Коммодор Перри из США привез несколько собак в Америку, два из которых были подарены королеве Англии Виктории. Начиная с 1868 года хин стал одной из любимых домашних собак дам высшего общества и в настоящее время широко распространен в качестве компаньона.

ОБЩИЙ ВИД: Маленькая собака, покрыта обильной шерстью, с широкой лицевой частью, элегантная и полная изящества.

ВАЖНЫЕ ПРОПОРЦИИ: Высота в холке равна длине корпуса. Корпус у сук немного длиннее.

ПОВЕДЕНИЕ/ТЕМПЕРАМЕНТ: Умная, уравновешенная и милая.

Череп: Широкий и округлый.
Переход от лба к морде: Глубокий и вогнутый.
ЛИЦЕВАЯ ЧАСТЬ:
Мочка носа: Спинка носа короткая и широкая, мочка носа расположена на одной линии с глазами, цвет мочки носа черный или глубокого телесного цвета, в соответствии с окрасом. Ноздри широко открыты.
Челюсти/Зубы: Зубы белые и крепкие, желателен прямой прикус, но допустимы также ножницеобразный прикус или перекус.

ГЛАЗА: Большие, но не чрезмерно, округлые, широко расставленные, блестящие, черного цвета.

УШИ: Длинные, треугольные, висячие, покрытые длинной шерстью, широко

ШЕЯ: Достаточно короткая, высокого постава.

КОРПУС:
Спина: Короткая и прямая.
Поясница: Широкая, слегка выпуклая.
Грудь: Умеренно широкая и глубокая, ребра умеренно изогнуты.
Линия низа и живот: Живот хорошо подтянут.

ХВОСТ: Закинут на спину, покрыт роскошной, обильной и длинной шерстью.

КОНЕЧНОСТИ:
ПЕРЕДНИЕ КОНЕЧНОСТИ:
Общий вид: Предплечья прямые, с тонким костяком, задняя сторона предплечий ниже локтей богато покрыта украшающим волосом.
Передние лапы: Маленькие, заячьи, предпочтительно с длинной шерстью между пальцами. ЗАДНИЕ КОНЕЧНОСТИ:
Общий вид: С умеренно выраженными углами сочленений, хорошо покрыты сзади украшающим волосом.
Задние лапы: Маленькие, заячьи, предпочтительно с кисточками волос.

ПОХОДКА/ДВИЖЕНИЯ: Элегантные, легкие, горделивые.

ШЕРСТНЫЙ ПОКРОВ:
Шерсть: Шелковистая, прямая и длинная. Весь корпус и голова, кроме лицевой части, покрыты обильной шерстью. Уши, шея, бедра и хвост обильно покрыты украшающим волосом.
Окрас: Белый с черными или рыжими отметинами. Симметричное распределение отметин вокруг глаз, на ушах и желательно на корпусе. Особенно желательно наличие широкой белой проточины от морды до верхней части головы.

РАЗМЕР И ВЕС:
Высота в холке:
Кобели: примерно 25 см.
Суки: чуть меньше кобелей.

НЕДОСТАТКИ: Любое отклонение от вышеуказанных положений следует считать недостатком, и серьезность, с которой оценивается этот недостаток, должна быть строго пропорциональна степени его выраженности, его влиянию на здоровье и благополучие собаки.
• Робость.
• Цвет мочки носа не черный у белых собак с черными отметинами.
• Недокус.
• Чисто белый окрас без отметин, одно пятно на морде.

ДИСКВАЛИФИЦИРУЮЩИЕ ПОРОКИ:
• Агрессивность или трусость.
• Любая собака, явно показывающая физические или поведенческие отклонения.
• Перекос нижней челюсти.
• Трехцветный (бело-черный с подпалом) окрас.

ПРИМЕЧАНИЯ:
• Кобели должны иметь два нормально развитых семенника, полностью опущенных в мошонку.
• Только функционально и клинически здоровые собаки с присущими конкретной породе характерными признаками могут использоваться в разведении.

General Appearance
The Japanese Chin is a small, well balanced, lively, aristocratic toy dog with a distinctive Oriental expression
.  It is light and stylish in action.
  The plumed tail is carried over the back, curving to either side. The coat is profuse, silky, soft and straight. The dog's outline presents a square appearance.

Size, Proportion, Substance
Size - Ideal size is 8 inches to 11 inches at the highest point of the withers.
Proportion - Length between the sternum and the buttock is equal to the height at the withers.
Substance - Solidly built, compact, yet refined.  Carrying good weight in proportion to height and body build.

Head
Expression - bright, inquisitive, alert, and intelligent.  The distinctive Oriental expression is characterized by the large broad head, large wide-set eyes, short broad muzzle, ear feathering, and the evenly patterned facial markings.
Eyes - set wide apart, large, round, dark in color, and lustrous.  A small amount of white showing in the inner corners of the eyes is a breed characteristic that gives the dog a look of astonishment.
Ears - hanging, small, V-shaped, wide apart, set slightly below the crown of the skull.  When alert, the ears are carried forward and downward.  The ears are well feathered and fit into the rounded contour of the head.
Skull - large, broad, slightly rounded between the ears but not domed.  Forehead is prominent, rounding toward the nose. Wide across the level of the eyes.  In profile, the forehead and muzzle touch on the same vertical plane of a right angle whose horizontal plane is the top of the skull.
Stop - deep.
Muzzle - short and broad with well-cushioned cheeks and roundedupper lips that cover the teeth.
Nose - very short with wide, open nostrils.  Set on a level with the middle of the eyes and upturned.  Nose leather is black in the black and white and the black and white with tan points, and is self-colored or black in the red and white.
Bite - The jaw is wide and slightly undershot. A dog with one or two missing or slightly misaligned teeth should not be severely penalized. The JapaneseChin is very sensitive to oral examination. If the dog displays any hesitancy, judges are asked to defer to the handler for presentation of the bite.

Neck, Topline, Body
Neck-moderate in length and thickness.Well set on the shoulders enabling the dog to carry its head up proudly.
Topline - level.
Body - square, moderately wide in the chest with rounded ribs.Depth of rib extends to the elbow.
Tail - set on high, carried arched up over the back and flowing to either sideof the body.

Forequarters
Legs - straight, and fine boned, with the elbows set close to the body. Removal of dewclaws is optional.
Feet - hare-shaped with feathering on the ends of the toes in the mature dog. Point straight ahead or very slightly outward.

Hindquarters
Legs - straight as viewed from the rear and fine boned.  Moderate bend of stifle.  Removal of dewclaws is optional.
Feet - hare-shaped with feathering on the ends of the toes in the mature dog.  Point straight ahead.

Coat
Abundant, straight, single, and silky. Has a resilient texture and a tendency to stand out from the body, especially on neck, shoulders, and chest areas where the hair forms a thick mane or ruff. The tail is profusely coated and forms a plume. The rump area is heavily coated and forms culottes or pants. The head and muzzle are covered with short hair except for the heavily feathered ears. The forelegs have short hair blending into profuse feathering on the backs of the legs. The rear legs have the previously described culottes, and in mature dogs, light feathering from hock joint to the foot.

Color
Either black and white, red and white, or black and white with tan points. The term tan points shall include tan or red spots over each eye, inside the ears, on both cheeks, and at the anal vent area if displaying any black. The term red shall include all shades of red, orange, and lemon, and sable, which includes anyaforementioned shade intermingled or overlaid with black. Among the allowed colors there shall be no preference when judging. A clearly defined white muzzle and blaze are preferable to a solidly marked head. Symmetry of facial markings is preferable. The size, shape, placement or number of body patches is not of great importance. The white is clear of excessive ticking.

Gait
Stylish and lively in movement. Moves straight with front and rear legs following in the same plane.

Temperament
A sensitive and intelligent dog whose only purpose is to serve man as a companion. Responsive and affectionate with those it knows and loves but reserved with strangers or in new situations.

A breed standard is the guideline which describes the ideal characteristics, temperament and appearance including the correct colour of a breed and ensures that the breed is fit for function. Absolute soundness is essential. Breeders and judges should at all times be careful to avoid obvious conditions or exaggerations which would be detrimental in any way to the health, welfare or soundness of this breed.
From time to time certain conditions or exaggerations may be considered to have the potential to affect dogs in some breeds adversely, and judges and breeders are requested to refer to the Breed Watch information related to this breed for details of any such current issues. If a feature or quality is desirable it should only be present in the right measure. However if a dog possesses a feature, characteristic or colour described as undesirable or highly undesirable, it is strongly recommended that it should not be rewarded in the show ring.
General appearance
Elegant and aristocratic, smart, compact with profuse coat.
Characteristics
Intelligent, happy, lively little dog who has look of astonishment, peculiar to this breed.
Temperament
Gay, happy, gentle and good natured.
Head and skull
Fairly large in proportion to size of dog, moderately broad skull, rounded in front, and between ears, but never domed. Nose large with open nostrils, black, except in red and whites where the colour can be appropriate to markings. Muzzle short, wide, well cushioned, i.e. upper lips rounded on each side of nostrils, jaws level.
Eyes
Moderately large, dark, set far apart. Size should be in proportion to size of skull. Small amount of white shows in the inner corners, giving characteristic look of astonishment. Eyes should be forward facing, not set on side of head.
Ears
Small, set wide apart, high on head, carried slightly forward, V-shaped, well feathered.
Mouth
Bite preferably level or slightly undershot; wry mouth or tongue showing highly undesirable.
Neck
Moderate length, carried proudly.
Forequarters
Legs straight with strong fine bone, giving slender appearance, well feathered down to the feet.
Body
Square and compactly built, wide in chest, ‘cobby’. Length of body equal to height at withers.
Hindquarters
Straight, viewed from behind, good turn of stifle, profusely feathered from the back of thighs.
Feet
Slender, hare footed, feathered at tips, pointing neither in nor out.
Tail
Set high on level back, profusely feathered, closely curved or plumed over back.
Gait/movement
Stylish, straight in movement, with good reach and elevation when in motion, no plaiting, and showing no weakness in hind movement.
Coat
Profuse, long, soft, straight, of silky texture. Absolutely free from curl or wave, not too flat, having a tendency to stand out especially at frill of neck.
Colour
Black and white or red and white. Never tricolour. Red includes all shades of sable, lemon or orange. The brighter and clearer the red the better. Colour evenly distributed on cheeks and ears and as patches on body. White should be clear, not flecked.
Size
Daintier the better, providing type, quality and soundness are not sacrificed. Ideal weight 1.8-3.2 kgs (4-7 lbs).
Faults
Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog and on the dog’s ability to perform its traditional work.
Note
Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
